1984 Quiz

In Book Two Chapter One of George Orwell’s classic novel 1984, Winston is in infatuated, but yet still paranoid. He fears that the women with dark hair (Julia) is a spy and is going to rat him out because of where he was in the previous chapter. However, he felt pity over her with the sling over her arm regardless of the fact that not to long ago Winston wanted to kill her. And as a matter of minutes this changed when Julia had gave him a note. Winston decided to open the note later and his two thoughts on it was either that it was note from thought police, or from the brotherhood. However it was not necessarily that, when he had finally opened it he soon realized that he has strong emotions towards her. That his ever day tasks would be difficult because he was truly infatuated with Julia. “When he did so, although he knew very well the danger of showing much interest, he could not resist reading it once again, just to make sure that the words were really there… This was the kind of thing that Winston was good at, and for more than two hours he succeeded in shutting the girl out of his mind altogether. Then the memory of her face came back, and with it a raging intolerable desire to be alone,” (Orwell 91). This shows that Winston showing a sense of infatuation, however still afraid because in their society they are not suppose to show much interest. This is a disappointing thing for Winston and important thing to know because over time Winston has changed his opinion/emotions towards Julia.
