In George Orwell’s 1984 many topics that have made me think have come across. The book deals with a dystopian world where everything is seen by “Big Brother”. The characters in the story are brainwashed and threaten by Big Brother to think and do certain things, and anything against Big Brother is forbidden. An interesting passage I read over was when Winston was discussing the proles, and how they don’t have to follow the regular laws and rules like the rest of the citizens do in Oceania. They consider the proles ignorant and stupid so that is why they do not have to follow the laws. They are not conscious of what is happening/going on to them, “Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious.” (Orwell 61) Winston also says that “if there is any hope it lies in the proles.”  That statement makes so much sense since they do not follow the regular restrictions and laws as the others, but if they ever do they will have consequences, so unfortunately since they are brainwashed that is less likely to happen.
