In the book 1984, the government is divided into four Ministries which are ironic if you really think about it.The Ministry of Truth where Winston is currently working in, concerns itself with news , entertainment, and education.Winston's job is to rectify the original piece by making them agree with he later ones. The original piece is thrown into the memory hole or it just simply disappears so whatever is told to the people or person receiving it is not the original piece. The Ministry of Peace focuses on war which is ironic because instead of it focusing on something positive it's doing the opposite. The Ministry of Plenty was responsible for economics affairs which is not accurate because instead of being fair with the money and doing something good with it the consumption of goods are running out."The Ministry of Love was the really frightening one."(Winston 8) This Ministry deals with infliction of misery, fear, suffering and torture. At first you might think these Ministries actually mean what they're called but they might focus on something totally different.

1984 Quiz Chapter 1 Book 2

  In chapter 2 of the book 1984, Winston, the main character starts having strong feelings towards the dark haired girl. Although in the beginning Winston used to be afraid of the girl, he even planned to hurt her because he was thinking that she was part of the party or the government. Before Winston ever had feelings for her he used to think of hurting her because she might have been an undercover person spying on him by Big Brother or the government. "He thought of her naked, youthful body, as he had seen it in his dream...A kind of fever seized him at the thought that he might lose her, the white youthful body might slip away from him." (Orwell 92). Surprisingly one night as Winston is walking home the dark haired girl appears in front of him. She then walks towards him and "accidentally." Winston tries to pick her up but as he is picking her up she slips in a note in his hands then she leaves. Winston then quickly walks home and reads it saying "I love you" causing this to be another problem because now he wants to see her. He tries to see her in the cafe but its hard to see one another because of the government. They eventually figure out a way which was a risky move.

                 A lot of people are afraid of their own government because of the power they hold of the nation. For example, in the book 1984 George Orwell writes " BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU." ( Orwell, 5) "Big Brother" has a lot of control of what the people do. They have complete control to the extent which they can see and hear everything. Big Brother has the Thought Police to arrest all those who oppose differently from them. Many of those people get arrested & executed because it is "wrong" even though there is no such thing as something being legal or illegal. Big Brother has to be this perfect symbol. Were everything he says has to be exact & if it isn't then it gets switched to what they say. And if people see that Big Brother is wrong then they will think differently and all will oppose.

In the book 1984 by George Orwell there's this passage "WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH," (Orwell 17) and it's the three slogans of the Party. Big Brother and the Party control the life's of people in Oceania. They have the language "Newspeak" and it's doublethink which is the ability to believe two contradictory ideas at once. Big Brother and the Party don't like people that are too clever, too intelligence, and speak too plainly. They have posters up with these slogans everywhere in the city. They want people to do as they say, believe whatever they say, the people from Oceania basically don't think for themselves the party is controlling them in every way they can. I think "War is peace" means at the end of the war the result is peace. The "Freedom is slavery" in 1984 the people from Oceania think their free but actually there slaves. The "Ignorance is strength" i think its that Big Brother wants to be so powerful, he wants to keep them dumb and he'll have control.

Orwell expected in 1984 that televisions will become more realistic with the senses of listening and the power to be watching every little move you make. Another consequence is that you would not be able to turn it off, in case you try to do something that it is not suppose to be done.

The portion I have chosen from 1984, explains to the reader about Winston's backfire to the note by the dark-haired girl. "When he did so, although he knew the danger of showing too much interest, he could not resist reading it once again, just to make sure that the words were really there." (Orwell, 90)This quotation from the book scared him because of the feelings he has towards her, his confusion to the note by the dark haired girl. The narrator says how Winston could not like her, due to that he wanted to read it again to make sure what she is trying to say. He becomes startled about being caught. It has only become a physical problem, which was to make a meeting with her. Even though Winston does not sound so smart because of his past problems, he actually made a brilliant idea to meet with her. He thought of every possible way to meet her, and he came to the outcome that the only place was in the canteen away from those eye spying telescreens. In this chapter, Winston keep on going about how he is going to be with her, but he is still paranoid.

An important passage for "1984" is when Winston goes and visits a pub where he sees an old man. Winston believes that the old man is a possible link to the past and Winston tries to speak with him but the old man memory was to uncertain. Winston walks home and visualizes that a dark-haired girl has been following him. He hurries home and decides the best thing to do is commit suicide before the Thought Police would try to torture him. He finally calms himself down by thinking about O'Brien and the darkness O'Brien had mentioned. Winston later takes out a coin and looks into Big Brothers eyes.

In George Orwell’s 1984 many topics that have made me think have come across. The book deals with a dystopian world where everything is seen by “Big Brother”. The characters in the story are brainwashed and threaten by Big Brother to think and do certain things, and anything against Big Brother is forbidden. An interesting passage I read over was when Winston was discussing the proles, and how they don’t have to follow the regular laws and rules like the rest of the citizens do in Oceania. They consider the proles ignorant and stupid so that is why they do not have to follow the laws. They are not conscious of what is happening/going on to them, “Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious.” (Orwell 61) Winston also says that “if there is any hope it lies in the proles.”  That statement makes so much sense since they do not follow the regular restrictions and laws as the others, but if they ever do they will have consequences, so unfortunately since they are brainwashed that is less likely to happen.

“Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they con not become conscious.”-Winston Smith.

                In the words of Dr. Sues, “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot.nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” Winston has come to grasp this concept loud and clear , through out  the years. But he understands that it is not he who needs to care a whole lot. It is the overlooked masses, the proles, who must act. Composing 85% of the population it is obvious that in a game of numbers the proles can overpower the party. However this quote  shows that Winston understands that the chance oif such revolution is very meek, since the proles do not even realize how much power the party has over them . The party does not bother in brain washing the because, in the words of Syme, “The proles are not human beings.” Therefore they will not be able to pick up newspeak further pushing the proles in to the dark. Since eventually old speak will be removed. They will have no way in which they could advance. Yet many of them  would not have noticed such thing . One could argue that this quote proves that our dear Ol’ Winnie is a cynical paranoid man, who has a dim hope in society ever improving due to the situation that the proles are in a constant feeling of not caring. In fact, this quote gives the idea that Winston is just waiting for an opportunity in which they can finally free themselves from Big Brother.

In the book 1984, every member of the party should show an emotion of happyness on their faces and they have to believe everything the party says. No one is allowed to be against the party’s ideas because if they are they can be disappeared. The reason why Winston is planning everything carefully is because he doesn’t want to ruin the only chance he has to talk to the girl with dark hair. It is very dangerous if the telescreen sees them talking because that’s not allowed in the party. Winston realizes how bad the consequences are but he has a plan and he will try putting it in action. He knows that the telescreen should not see them  having a conversation and what he does is figure out a way to talk to her without any one noticing. After a whole week that Winston impatiently waited for, he finally got close enough to her and sat at her table. In a low murmuring Winston began speaking, “ What time do you leave work?” (Orwell 94) This is how their 30 seconds conversation began. Neither of them looked up they just talked with no expressions on their faces. That was a good way to avoid being caught by the telescreen because if they were heard talking about another subject not related to work, they would have to suffer some serious consequences by the Though Police.

Everybody in Oceania is always being watched. Their is an instrument in every ones house that watches there very move. It can even speak to the person. "The instrument could be dimmed, but there was no way of shutting it off completely." (Orwell 6). The telescreen could never be shut down. In other words it is watching you at all times. It can also hear anything as load as a whisper. Winston is always trying to stay away from the telescreen when he is writing in his diary because he is not allowed to own a diary. It can also be considered as a thoughtcrime. Nobody in Oceania can do anything in private as long as telescreens are still existing.

The excerpt I have chosen from 1984 explains the need or wanting for advancements in Newspeak, pages 45 through 46. We're getting the language into it's final shape-the shape it's going to have when nobody speaks anything else (Orwell 45). In this quote we see that Syme, Winston's comrade,  is justifying that Newspeak is to be the only language. In this quote we also see that the author is giving the character Syme a passsion for Newspeak and is enjoying the destruction of words. The author uses the quote to show that in this world the language is to be grown to be the only one used by people. Don't you see that the whole aim for Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible because there will be no words in which to express it (Orwell 46). In this quote we see that Syme is viewing Newspeak as a good thing and wants it to keep advancing because he follows the idea of Big Brother and agrees and doesn't go against it. The author placed a character in the book that follows on with Big Brother to give Winston more of a challenge on hiding his thoughts because he has committed thoughtcrime and he knows his fellow commrade would be gladly to report him to the thoughtpolice.

                     In the book 1984, the party has such a great influence on the people living in Oceania, even kids. This can be concluded after reading '"Up with your hands!" yelled a savage voice. A handsome, tough-looking boy of nine had popped up from behind the table and was menacing him with a toy pistol..."You're a traitor!" yelled the boy. "You're a though criminal! You're a Eurasian spy! I'll shoot you, I'll Vaporize you, I'll send you to the salt mines!"...and denounced his parents to the thought police.' (Orwell 22-4). Kids living in Oceania actually praised the party and worshiped Big Brother. They followed every rule and were against every enemy: foreigners, traitors, saboteurs, though-criminals. These enemies often included their own parents! They actually told on their parents! These kids were often referred to as 'child hero' in the Times, which was a newspaper written in the world of Oceania. This comes to show that the party influenced their society so much, that even newer generations were born liking the party and being faithful to it. It takes a lot of nerve to tell on someone when you know that telling on them will get them killed, and the kids in 1984 did this to their own parents. Based on this passage, you can also notice how brainwashed these kids are since they want to go and see the hanging of Eurasian Prisoners.

In 1984 by George Orwell the protagonist Winston lives in a life filled with fear of being vaporized. He lives in Oceania, which used to be London, in a totalitarianism government controlled by Big Brother. There are no laws in this great world but there are thoughtcrimes. Thoughtcrimes are any thoughts that are against Big Brother, these crimes with get you either vaporized or sent to labor camps. Children admire the Party and worship Big Brother and spy on adults and are willing to out anyone who commits a thought crime. Winston works in the Ministry of Truth altering documents so that they match with current history. Through his line of work he learns a lot of knowledge that he shouldn't know. Winston doesn't agree with the government he lives in and keeps a diary to document his thoughts. He writes “DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER”(Orwell 19) in his diary without thinking about it. He also writes “Thoughtcrime does not entail death: Thoughtcrime IS death”(Orwell 27). These quotes show how Winston’s thought process can get him in trouble. Living in a totalitarianism government shows how controlling Big Brother is and the citizens already know the consequences. Winston knows that if he gets caught writing in his diary he will die. he lives in constant fear but prefers suicide over all the torture that he'll go through before the Thought Police kill him. Thoughts crimes doesn't result in death it is death itself.

Obvious things can not be changed no matter what or who tries to deny them. After all, it only takes common sense to recognize the reality. In 1984, Big Brother is viewed as the savior of all the people because according to the Party, he rescued them from all the horrendous things that the capitalists apparently did. He improved so many things that only make the lives of the citizens of Oceania better. Therefore, the people take in anything that Big Brother and the Party say as a fact without having the slightest concern that they might be wrong. “Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows.” (Orwell 69). This quote shows that the people of Oceania are manipulated into thinking that the Party is the good guy here not the villain. Winston argues that the reality is the contrary because the Party denies them the right to think for themselves. They do not have any freedom because they can not think freely and accept the reality that stands before them. Without them knowing, the Party has blinded them and turned them into their personal slaves.

          The book 1984 by George Orwell, takes place in a country named Oceania where the citizens are controlled by a dictator known as Big Brother and the Party. The citizens of Oceania are too afraid of doing, saying, or even thinking anything that will come off as being against The Party and Big Brother. This is because you are always being watched and the Thought Police can even go into your mind and read your thoughts. By keeping a diary for the future to read, Winston, the main character is in danger of being caught for crime at any moment. "Thoughtcrime does not entail death: thoughtcrime IS death. Now that he recognized himself as a dead man it became important to stay alive as long as possible." Here George Orwell let's us know that although Winston is afraid of getting caught, he's willing to take a risk for the future that will hopefully read his diary. He accepts being in danger of getting caught "betraying" Big Brother.He is aware that sooner or later he will get caught but that would be worth it to leave this for the future to read, about how the past actually was, opposed to how Big Brother made it seem.

     Winston Smith, a man whose thirty-nine that has a varicose ulcer above his right ankle and man who works for the Ministry of Truth even though he is against the Big Brother while everyone thinks the Big Bro is their savior. Winston Smith hates his surroundings, hates the people he’s around, hates how the Big Brother keeps everyone under surveillance and he even hates himself but that all changes until the dark haired girl passes him a note that will make him change the perspective of things and on himself. “He rolled up the completed bundle of work and slid it into the pneumatic tube. Eight minutes had gone by. He readjusted his spectacles on his nose, sighed, and drew the next batch of work toward him, with the scrap of paper on top of it. He flattened it out. On it was written, in large uniformed handwriting: I love you.” (Orwell 90). In part two chapter 1, Winston finds out someone loves him because he is a man that lives in a world where there is poverty and everyone is being under the watchful eyes of Big Brother. Just one wrong move and you will be vanished from existence. When Winston reads the letter he starts to feel special and he starts to wonder why the dark haired girl loves him. Why she has choose him to be that special person. Winston starts to become distracted and he plans to talk to her but he has to be careful due to the many surroundings of the telescreens.

What did Winston think when Julia gave him a note and said I Love You? Did he really want to get in touch with her and talk to her? Or did he want to avoid and ignore her after he felt like smashing her head with the paperweight that he had purchased? "It was a physical problem that had to be solved: how to get in touch with the girl and arrange a meeting. He did not consider and longer the possibility that she might be laying some kind of trap for him. He knew that it was not so,because of her unmistakable agitation when she handed him the note," (Orwell91). Once Winston came out the shop, he automatically assumed that she was a spy, but now he believes that she is not because he feels that sympathy towards her. Would he might like her? This passage that I quoted answers these questions. He did want to get a hold of her with out any one finding out because they might suspect something. He wanted to know what was "I Love You" all about. Winston then knew that she wasn't laying a trap on him because he felt agitation when she slide the note through his sleeve. I believe that Winston now, has some sort of interest in this dark-haired girl.

In 1984 by George Orwell society is controlled and ruled by The Party and Big Brother. Big Brother rules Oceania in a form of totalitarianism because most citizens’ feel threatened and scared of the thought police, inclusively they are at risk because anyone around them can be a spy of the thought police. Oceania’s slogans are rather contradicting, “WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGH” (Orwell 26). I find this ironic because war is unpeaceful however wars settle arguments and the winner of the war achieves peacefulness. Freedom is slavery is expressed in the book because the citizens think they’re free but in reality they’re living under circumstances slaves would. Ignorance is strength applies to Big Brother because the ignorance of the citizens of Oceania is his strength, as long as they’re ignorant of his actions he has control over them.

1984 Part 2 Chapter 1 Quiz

In the second chapter of 1984, Winston develops some feelings toward the young dark-haired girl. At first, he is afraid that she will expose him as a traitor of Big Brother and the government, but apparently it does not seem to be the case. In an awkward encounter where the girl falls on her broken arm, she hands Winston a small note as he helps her get up after her fall. As soon as Winston reads the small note that reads “I love you”, he finds it hard to focus and concentrate on his work. “Only five nights ago he had contemplated smashing her skull in with a cobblestone; but that was of no importance. He thought of her naked, youthful body, as he had seen it in his dream.... A kind of fever seized him at the thought that he might lose her, the thought that he might lose her , the white youthful body might slip away from him!” (Orwell 92). A while ago, Winston considered murdering her because he hated her because of the possibility that she might turn him in to the government. However, he now hates her for another reason. The dark-haired girl represents his vulnerability to love. She is capable of making him experience true love. He hates her for representing his gullibility when it comes to love and emotion. The girl might be provoking him to express emotion to expose him to the government, but she might actually love him. Winston is having a difficult time during this part of the story. The risk of being caught in love is severely punishable, but emotions sometimes take control of our minds and avoid usual habits. Winston will probably take the risk and love the young girl.

1984 Part 2 Chapter 1

Winston Smith a 39 year old man has finally found a reason to live in the cruel world he is in. The women he referred to as the black haired girl has been constantly appearing every where he was at. Finally when he sees her once more she falls down on the ground, he of course assists her to get back on her feet. Within that moment she gave him a little note and it had said “I love you.” Winston Smith has then found a reason to live in the world he lives in. “At the sight of the words I love you the desire to stay alive had welled up in him, and the taking of minor risks suddenly seemed stupid. It was not till twenty-three hours, when he was home and in bed-in the darkness, where you were safe even from the telescreen so long as you kept silent-that he was able to think continuously.” Well this passage is basically saying that he has finally felt like he had a reason to live since he lived in a world where there is poverty everywhere and a dictator (Big Brother). The reason why he lived in a cruel world was because everyone had a lack of privacy. You were always being watched, mostly everyone lived a miserable life. He lived in a world where no one had emotions, knowing that someone had feelings for him over whelmed him.

The quote I chose was a slogan of one of the Partys. To me it kind of means the way they live, how their live is, the misery and how things have changed from the past. The kind of live they have and living basically, how things are the opposite that what it use to be. The quote says how war is considered peace but actually war is the opposite of peace that makes things worse. We all know that when there is a war things get ugly and it does not turn into peace sometimes. War also is something that is negative that we do not want war to happen. Basically its how the world has changed negatively. “War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength,” (Orwell 87). I mean really slavery is not freedom at all. Slavery is being a prisoner, being unhappy, controlled, and miserable, doing things you do not want to. This passage has a negative meaning and opposite. The passage is talking about how the people or comrades in Oceania live. They are being controlled and live in war and like slaves controlled they don’t have freedom so to them slavery is like freedom.

In Book Two Chapter One of George Orwell’s classic novel 1984, Winston is in infatuated, but yet still paranoid. He fears that the women with dark hair (Julia) is a spy and is going to rat him out because of where he was in the previous chapter. However, he felt pity over her with the sling over her arm regardless of the fact that not to long ago Winston wanted to kill her. And as a matter of minutes this changed when Julia had gave him a note. Winston decided to open the note later and his two thoughts on it was either that it was note from thought police, or from the brotherhood. However it was not necessarily that, when he had finally opened it he soon realized that he has strong emotions towards her. That his ever day tasks would be difficult because he was truly infatuated with Julia. “When he did so, although he knew very well the danger of showing much interest, he could not resist reading it once again, just to make sure that the words were really there… This was the kind of thing that Winston was good at, and for more than two hours he succeeded in shutting the girl out of his mind altogether. Then the memory of her face came back, and with it a raging intolerable desire to be alone,” (Orwell 91). This shows that Winston showing a sense of infatuation, however still afraid because in their society they are not suppose to show much interest. This is a disappointing thing for Winston and important thing to know because over time Winston has changed his opinion/emotions towards Julia.

       The  fact  that  these  passage  shows  that  Winston  has  no  emotion  to  what  he  is  doing  with  the  black  hair  girl. This  passage  is  important  because  it  tells  us  that  Winston  likes  her  because  she’s  bad. The  years  that  he  had  spend  in  his  life  had  to  be  controlled  but  now  he  wants  to  stop  being  good  to  the  party. He  liked  the  part  that  she  has  not  feeling  and  enjoys  having  relations  with  who ever. " That  was  above  all  he  wanted  to  hear. Not  merely  the  love  of  one  person, but  the  animal  instinct, the  simple  undifferentiated  desire: that  was  the  force  that  would  tear  the  party  to  pieces."  They  both  seem  to  be  getting  along  just  by  looking  at  the  passage. Maybe  in  the  future  they  can  make  a  better  future. It  tells  us  that  he  doesn't  want  someone  who  truly  loves  him, but  some  different  human, like  in  the  part  where  he  talked  about  the  animal  instinct.

The society of Oceania has lost emotion and the people have absent feelings. In book two chapter 1 Winston receives a note from the dark haired girl that has been stocking him. Winston believes this girl is a spy and has been sent to eliminate him by the party. However, when the girl falls in front of him on his way to the lavatory, she secretly slips a note in his hand. The note says "I love you." which is odd to anyone since Winston does not even know her. Although the words are astonishing themselves, Winston finds the fact that the girl actually expressed emotion to be the astonishing part. In the novel it says "For several seconds he was too stunned even to throw the incriminating thing into the memory hole" (Orwell 90). The word "incriminating" reveals that the simple words stated by the girl display too much emotion and can even incriminate one. Overall this passage is a great way to further understand the atypical society that Winston lives in and how strict his society is.

1984 is a book written in a world where the government watches everything you do. The main protagonist is a man named Winston Smith and his job is to recreate historical documents and modify them to show the public what they want them to see and then they burn the original. It revolves around a world where there is no freedom and nothing you do can be undetected, there is no sanction of privacy. During Hate Week Winston begins to think differently of how the government is and starts to wonder how the world might look if Big Brother wasn't always watching over there shoulder. He begins to write in a diary to express his emotions and at one point he ends up writing DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER and that's where everything on his new perspective begins.
The quote that I have chosen is in chapter 1 where the people of the Ministry of Truth begin to surround themselves around the telescreen for the Hate on Goldstein. As people begin to chant Big Brother continuously Winston unknowingly was writing down with big brother in his diary.
"But he did not do so, however, because he knew that it was useless. Whether he wrote DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER, or whether he refrained from writing it, made no difference. Whether he went on with his diary, or whether he did not go on with it, made no difference. The Thought Police would get him just the same. He had committed-would still have committed, even if it had never set pen to paper-the essential crime that contained all others in itself. Thiughtcrime, they called it. Thoughtcrime was not a thing that could be concealed forever. You might dodge successfully for a while, even for years, but sooner or later they were bound to get you." (Orwell 19). The meaning behind the quote above is that what he has done is against the law and that one way or another the government will find him and persecute him. He is afraid that one phrase can lead to his demise and cause major problems for him in the near future. It was not intentional, it was just a reaction to what was going on inm the moment, he had no control of his subconcious. It shows that the manipulation of the governmnent can be broken and within doing so can cause ideas on how to modify the government. It shows that the people have been opressed for so long and Winstons new viewpoint of society could result in the downfall of Big Brother.

In book two chapter 3, Julia has a talk with Winston about death and speaks out the truth. Julia quotes, "Not physically. Six months, a year--five years, conceivably. I am afraid of death. You are young, so presumably you're more afraid of it than I am. Obviously we shall put it off as long as we can. But it makes very little difference. So long as human beings stay human, death and life are the same thing." I truly believe in this quote due to the meaning behind it, if we humans stay humans, life or death won't harm. Julia says, "We're not dead, YET," before she gives out her point of view to Winston in which he quoted, "We are the dead." In this quote, Winston tries to make a point that life has no meaning and we are just the dead. Winston believes life is a pointless time so he is somewhat afraid of death until Julia gives out her point of view. Julia points out that as long as we stay human, we shall not worry about death because by then, death is nothing and it is as similar as life.

The Party uses techniques to break down the psychological independence of the people. An example of this would be the slogan "Who Controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past"
(Orwell 32). If you have control of the past, them you could control what will happen in the future. Not only that but you could make the people feel a certain away about the future. For example Oceania's past was based on slavery and poorness. Therefore the people feel that they have advanced as a society.

In the novel 1984, Winston is a simple man and every man has a bit of doubt that may consume them eventually, and that is exactly what is happening to him. Winston has been under the presumption that the Ministry of Truth, where he is currently working at, is being corrupt. The whole idea of Big Brother to him is starting to sound unjust to the citizens of Oceania. One night he happens to take a different route then he usually does, he goes to a pub and the to the store, but on his way home he sees that a girl with dark hair was following him. Winston panicked believing that she had discovered that he had committed a crime, at home he began to think of suicide. His mind began to overthink, his paranoia grew, he instantly took out his diary, but could not think of anything to write. “He tried to think of O'Brien, for  whom, or to whom, the diary  was written, but instead began thinking of the thing that would happen to him after the Thought Police took him away" (Orwell 87).  That night Winston  kept seeing Big Brothers image, but it soon drifted back to O'Brien and the horrendous slogan he would never forget,

TWO 1984- Hector Ortiz

In chapter 2 the girl had been stalking Winston and then thinks she will report him to the thought police. He later gets a note from the girl which she confesses three words that stun him, I Love You. He becomes frustrated and worried as he can’t contact her up until a week later. He later makes contact with her in a bar telling him to meet him at Victory Square while there is a crowd to not be seen on the Telescreen or heard.AS he makes his way through the crowd she gives Winston directions to get to Paddington station. As he gets through the crowd he notices the prisoners and sees how pitiful they are. At the hand he and girl hold hands and he feels delighted and feels everything of her hands but yet while he is watching the prisoner’s eyes.

For my quiz I have chosen,  War is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength.  I will explain what they mean.

War Is Peace - peace is indeed a fight, for you have to stand in front of many  to suffer and have to find your greatest opponent, its not to harm him, but rather to improve him that you fight and your success isnt mesured in kills or threats

Freedom Is Slavery-  you are compelled to be free; life enslaved you and you put a chain on your throat so your were forced to  choose until your chain is cut off...... but only death has cutters.

Ignorance Is Strength- people that dont think for themselves are part of the reason Big Brother was able to take over. Think of it like members of a cult that arent allowed to think for themeselves, it makes the cult leaders stronger. Big Brother can be substituted with a lot of different ways of thinking.

The excerpt I have chosen from 1984, explains to the reader about Winston's first reaction to the note given by the dark-haired girl. "For several seconds he was too stunned even to throw the incriminating thing into the memory hole. When he did so, although he knew the danger of showing too much interest, he could not resist reading it once again, just to make sure that the words were really there." (Orwell, 90)This quotation from the book proves his confusion to the given note. For example, the narrator tells us how Winston could not resist to his interest, so he had to read it a second time to confirm what he had just read. Winston knows that this is a quite incriminating action from her part and him as well for reading it, so as a result he becomes paranoid about being caught. Winston manages to bear with the matter being, that it has only become a physical problem, which was to arrange a meeting with her. How he tries to play off the situation is pretty smart of him. He thought of every possible way to meet and he came to the conclusion that the only place was in the canteen away from telescreens. Throughout this chapter he is described to be wise on how he will take care of the situation yet paranoid at the fact that what he is doing is risky and incriminating.

1994

In the book 1984 there in a place where everyone can see them. So Winston has a dream about a guy telling him what to do but he says “We shall meet in the place where there no darkness” and this has a lot of meaning behind it. He tells him how where’s he’s at there too much evil there. He needs to go or find a self place where there’s light, where’s there’s good not evil or bad. But he gives him hope that he will find a place or time when they will not be any darkness.

     A lot of people aren't very conscious of the state that they are in. People living in the society of 1984 don't know that they are being oppressed. Winston observes women as they riot over things that do not matter, such as the supply of saucepans that were being sold. They accused the stall keeper of favoritism and of holding back reserves of saucepans elsewhere. "Until they become conscious, they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled, they cannot become conscious," (Orwell 61).  The citizens of Oceania don't know what's going around them and they do not rebel. They don't know that their own government has been keeping them in an oppressed state so, they choose to not rebel. They will not rebel until they find out what's going on behind the scenes. Instead of rising up for what matters, they choose to riot for things that shouldn't matter. Their choice only depends on as much as they know and if they aren't self-aware, they will not choose to rebel against the tyrannical government controlling their lives.

During hate week, Winston had made eye contact with O'Brien which made him think that O'Brien was trying to give him a message with just a look. He believed that the message was to revolt against Big Brother. After hate week, Winston is under the impression of Big Brother aware of the thought crime he has committed. Winston begins to write in his notebook, " theyll shoot me i dont care theyll shoot me in the back of the neck i dont care down with big brother" (Orwell 20). Winston becomes paranoid and begins to panic but is firm with the idea of revolting against Big Brother. Later on, he begins to worry but is dedicated to somehow go against Big Brother. This passage gave me the idea of Winston planning to go against Big Brother and attempt to change the way that Big Brother has a control of everything. Also this provides the idea that Winston is against Big Brother and will try to do something to stop Big Brother.

In book two chapter 1 of "1984" by George Orwell Winston finds out the girl with dark hair, Julia, loves him this is a significant progression in the plot. In the world of 1984 the party has essentially made loving someone impossible, for example if a couple is to get married they have to get the marriage approved by a committee who determines whether or not there exist any physical attraction. The fact that there exist an attraction between Winston and Julia this attraction may potentially be their first major act of rebellion against the party and its ideals. If something such as love exist then does that mean that there is a possibility that the "Brotherhood" may also exist. The party has tried to prevent its citizens from experiencing love, because it is such a powerful emotion maybe even powerful enough to overthrow the party. For example in book two chapter one page 303 Winston feels the effect of love in this excerpt, “When he did so, although he knew very well the danger of showing too much interest, he could not resist reading it once again, just to make sure that the words were really there.” The feeling of love has overpowered Winston so much so that he couldn't restrain himself from looking at the letter once more. Even though Winston was very aware of the consequences that he may face if he is caught with the letter, he managed to disregard those feelings because love is far more powerful than fear.

The Big Brother government is very controlling. The people in power are very smart and seem to find a way to deal with any obstacle they face. "Wintson did not know why Withers had been disgraced, perhaps Big Brother was getting rid of a too poplar subordinate," (Orwell 41). If Withers was very popular among the people why would the government get rid of him. He could have been an influence for many people and persuade them to support and love the party. Winston says that he thinks  his comrade Syme will also be vaporized in the future. I believe the reason the government gets rid of popular and smart people is because they see them as a threat to the government itself. I think they fear that someone at some point will or is capable of outsmarting Big Brother.

1984 Paragraph Quiz

                 In 1984 is about a man named Winston that has never had love in his life not even in his childhood. He had a troubled back story and cannot believe that the brunette had an interest in him after he thought she was a spy. He was extremely shocked that she wrote him and she loved him on a piece of paper. He could not react even if that little slip of paper could incriminate him. He knew it was too dangerous to put to much interest in the slip of paper. I quote "When he did so, although he knew very well the danger of showing too much interest, he could not resist reading it once again, just to make sure that the words were really there" (Orwell 90). Thus shows that he is so surprised that he cannot believe someone has feelings for him, with his ugly background.

Analyzing Quiz

The three slogans of the party stood out I me. The phrases "WAR IS PEACE" "FREEDOM IS SLAVERY", and "IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH", (Orwell 17). The only fact that this type of writing is being communicated to a specific group of people is surprising. In my opinion, there are four "isms" which are ageism, classism, sexism, and racism. From what I read, there seems to be evidence of "ism" mentioned above. Isolating information holds certain period down mentally, socially, and economically.

      In this section of the passage Winston was going home after the pub he visited."There was no doubting any longer that the girl was spying on him" (Orwell 85).While walking on an obscure back street to his home in the evening, there was a dark haired woman with blue overalls and it seemed like she was following him. Winston felt paranoid by the thought of the thought police capturing him for his actions against big brother.  She was the girl from the Fiction department, Winston was frightened by thought of the party members catching on to him. Winston had no idea what she was looking for or what she was after, Winston was paranoid. Winston had reason to believe that his actions will have him vaporized sooner or later by the thought police and was horrified of the consequences.
